I stared at the screen.
“Why didn’t Grant tell me?”
“Maybe he didn’t know right away.”
Then she found a document filed three months before the accident.
Grant had petitioned the court for access to the company’s financial records.
The petition claimed suspected fraud and unauthorized transfers.
Two weeks later, the petition was withdrawn.
And beside the withdrawal was a signature.
Grant’s signature.
Except I knew immediately that it wasn’t his.
The letters were too straight.
The capital G was wrong.
Someone had forged my husband’s name.
“Print everything,” I told Hannah.
She looked at me.
“Mom, what exactly are we doing?”
I thought about the little girl upstairs.
About three boys whose birthdays we still celebrated.
About a husband whose final warning had been hidden inside a stuffed animal.
“We’re finding out who killed your father.”
CHAPTER 5 — SIX STEPS INTO DARKNESS
We left at two in the afternoon.
