ON OUR ANNIVERSARY, I FLEW ON MY FLIGHT ATTENDANT WIFE’S FLIGHT TO SURPRISE HER – THEN THE PILOT’S ANNOUNCEMENT LEFT ME FROZEN

Richard boarded Laura’s flight with the intention of surprising his wife on their anniversary, never imagining that he would discover something before an entire cabin that would force him to question everything. One announcement from the captain transformed his romantic surprise into the beginning of the worst mistake of his life.

For 12 years, my wife and I had built our marriage around departures.

Departures from plans we promised we would keep, only to change them when the weather over Denver became terrible.

Or when her crew was reassigned.

Or when a connection through Chicago fell apart.

When you marry a flight attendant, you quickly realize that time together rarely follows a calendar. You take whatever hours you can get and stop treating schedules as promises. Laura used to joke that our marriage had more layovers than most flight plans.

The truth was, there was plenty of romance too. We simply had to put in more effort to protect it.

We celebrated birthdays through video calls with terrible airport Wi-Fi.

We had anniversary dinners at ten at night because her flight arrived three hours late.

One Christmas morning, she came home still dressed in her uniform, kissed me at the door, and then left again hours later. None of it made me love her any less.

If anything, I admired her even more.

But there was one thing that all the miles and unpredictable schedules could never make easier.

We wanted a child.
