The WHO specifically states that COVID-19 vaccines can prevent severe disease and death even though vaccinated people can still become infected.
Think of vaccination as strengthening the body’s defenses.
It is not necessarily a permanent force field surrounding the body.
A vaccinated person can still
encounter the virus.
The virus can still enter the respiratory system.
The immune system may still have to fight it.
But previous vaccination can give that immune system a head start.
That head start can make an enormous difference.
Getting Infected Is Not the Same as Becoming Severely Ill
This is one of the most important distinctions in understanding COVID-19 vaccination.
There are several different outcomes after exposure to SARS-CoV-2.
One person may never develop noticeable symptoms.
Another may develop mild congestion and fatigue.
Someone else may develop fever and
a significant cough.
A vulnerable person could develop pneumonia, respiratory complications or other serious problems.
