“It wasn’t exactly like that.”
“What exactly was it like?”
“She couldn’t cover the deposit.”
I laughed once.
“So you canceled our baby’s childcare so your mistress could rent an apartment.”
“I was going to put the money back.”
“With what?”
“My next bonus.”
“And what was I supposed to do when I returned to work and discovered we had no daycare?”
He looked away.
Suddenly, every piece clicked together.
That first conversation.
His mother’s offer.
The secrecy.
The refund.
She hadn’t merely known that Caleb canceled the daycare.
She knew why.
“You asked your mother to watch our daughter so I wouldn’t notice the money was gone.”
“She offered.”
“And you let her cover for you.”
“She told me to end things with Mara.”
“But she still helped you hide it from me.”
Caleb sank into a chair.
“I told Mom it was finished before the baby was born.”
