“Your mother knew.”
Caleb nodded.
“Since when?”
“Before the baby came.”
I stared at him.
“She knew while she sat in my house bringing casseroles?”
“Jess…”
“She knew while I was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
I turned away from him.
Then another thought struck me.
“The daycare.”
Caleb went silent.
I slowly looked back at him.
“The daycare wasn’t really about saving money, was it?”
His silence answered before he did.
“Why did you cancel it?”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I needed the refund.”
My entire body went cold.
“What did you do with the money?”
He hesitated.
“Tell me.”
“I used some of it.”
“For what?”
“Jess, it doesn’t matter.”
“That money belonged to both of us.”
He closed his eyes.
Then he said the sentence that broke whatever remained between us.
“Mara needed help paying for an apartment.”
I stared at him.
“You used the money we had saved for our daughter’s daycare to help your girlfriend get an apartment?”
