MY FAMILY HELD MY 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER DOWN AND CUT HER HAIR AT A BIRTHDAY PARTY… BECAUSE SHE “OUTSHINED” THE BIRTHDAY GIRL.
The next morning, they were crying in front of the police.
“If your daughter wanted to show off, then she should learn not to outshine the birthday girl.”
My mother said those words without even looking ashamed.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
My name is Rachel, and I work long shifts at a public hospital in Chicago. That weekend, I had to work late, so I couldn’t stay for my niece Chloe’s twelfth birthday party.
My daughter Emma was eleven.
She had been looking forward to that party for weeks.
That morning, she woke up earlier than usual and stood in front of her mirror for almost twenty minutes, deciding what to wear.
Finally, she chose a soft yellow dress.
Then she brought me her hairbrush.
“Mom, can you make my hair pretty?”
Emma had always loved her hair.
It was long, thick, and naturally curly, falling almost to the middle of her back. She never bragged about it. She simply loved how it made her feel.
The night before the party, I had even taken her to a salon.
It cost more than I should have spent, but when she looked into the mirror afterward, her eyes lit up.
Her curls were beautifully defined, with a small side braid decorated with tiny pearls.
“Do you think Chloe will like it?” she asked.
I kissed her forehead.
“Of course. You look beautiful.”
She smiled.
