MY FAMILY HELD MY 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER DOWN AND CUT HER HAIR AT A BIRTHDAY PARTY… BECAUSE SHE “OUTSHINED” THE BIRTHDAY GIRL.

She had also spent the entire week making Chloe a handmade gift—a little decorated box filled with bracelets she had carefully made herself.
I dropped her off at my sister Vanessa’s house before going to work.
My mother Diane and father Robert were already there.
So were several relatives.
I trusted them.
That was my mistake.
A little before 8 p.m., I finally arrived to pick Emma up.
The front door opened.
Emma walked outside.
And I froze.
For several seconds, I honestly didn’t recognize my own daughter.
Her beautiful hair was gone.
Not trimmed.
Not styled.
Cut.
Uneven chunks had been hacked away. Some pieces barely reached her ears while others hung near her chin.
Her dress was wrinkled.
Her face was red.
And she wouldn't look at me.
“Emma…”
She tried to smile.
“Mom, I'm okay.”
I knew immediately she was lying.
I dropped my bag.
“What happened?”
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“They cut my hair.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
Emma finally looked up at me.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Grandma… and Aunt Vanessa.”
I pulled her into my arms.
She clung to me so tightly that her little hands were shaking.
“I wanted to go home, Mom.”
I held her tighter.
Then I looked toward the house.
My mother was standing in the doorway.
Vanessa was behind her.
Neither looked sorry.
My mother folded her arms.
“She was making Chloe feel bad.”
I stared at her.
