Then Hannah turned the recorder over.
“There’s another file.”
She pressed the button.
A different recording began.
Wind.
Rain.
A car engine.
Then Benjamin’s voice.
“Dad?
Why is Officer Miles following us?”
I stopped breathing.
CHAPTER 6 — THE VOICES FROM THE STORM
The recording continued.
Grant sounded frightened, but he was trying not to show it.
“Everybody keep your seat belts on.”
Oliver asked, “Dad, what’s happening?”
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
Nathan spoke next.
“Dad, there’s another truck behind his.”
I heard windshield wipers.
The sound of heavy rain.
Then a horn.
Grant whispered something I couldn’t understand.
A moment later, he said clearly:
“Emily, if this records, I love you.”
I covered my mouth.
“Tell the girls I love them.”
A sudden impact exploded through the speaker.
Metal shrieked.
Someone screamed.
The recorder rattled.
Then the audio became distorted.
For several seconds, there was nothing but rain.
