I nodded.
She pressed Play.
Static filled the air.
Then Grant’s voice emerged.
“October nineteenth.
Eight forty-three p.m.
Recording conversation with Miles Carter.”
My heart stopped at the sound of him.
Five years.
Five years since I’d heard my husband’s real voice.
Then another voice spoke.
Miles.
“You need to stop digging, Grant.”
“You forged my signature.”
“You don’t understand what’s at stake.”
“I understand you stole from my brother.”
A sharp sound followed.
Something striking a table.
Then Miles said words I would never forget.
“Peter didn’t listen either.
Look what happened to him.”
Hannah gasped.
Grant’s voice became hard.
“Did you kill my brother?”
Silence.
Then Miles laughed.
“You’re asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
“How many people are you willing to lose before you learn to keep quiet?”
The recording ended abruptly.
I sat motionless.
