Why Putting Salt in Your Toilet Is a Little-Known Tip From Plumbers

You don’t need half a bag of salt.

You don’t need to leave it sitting overnight.

And you definitely don’t need to combine it with a handful of other household chemicals.

Step 1: Flush the Toilet

Start with a clean flush so the bowl is relatively clear of loose debris.

If the toilet already has visible buildup, you’ll get better results by cleaning the bowl normally first.

Step 2: Sprinkle a Small

Amount of Salt

Sprinkle roughly ½ to 1 cup of ordinary table salt around the inside of the bowl, particularly over areas with light surface residue.

There’s no advantage to dumping an enormous quantity into the toilet.

More salt doesn’t automatically mean more cleaning power.

Step 3: Let It Sit Briefly

Give the salt several minutes to sit on the damp surface.

You don’t need to leave it there all night.

This is simply giving the crystals time to remain in contact with the residue before you scrub.
