“This year, we’re only having dinner with my wife’s family,” my son told me. I simply replied, “perfect.” What he didn’t know was that i had just bought a 110 million peso beachfront villa. Instead of sitting home excluded, I invited everyone they had pushed aside over the years and hosted my own celebration. When the photos appeared online, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing… because suddenly, the family that had no room for me desperately wanted an invitation.
The Seat They Thought I Didn’t Deserve
Six days before Christmas Eve, my son called while I was making coffee and told me not to come to dinner.
“Mom, Carla wants to keep it small this year. Just her family.”
I stood in my little Chula Vista apartment, watching steam rise from my mug.
“Her family?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No, Hugo. I don’t think I do.”
He exhaled like someone who had already made a decision and resented having to explain it.
“Carla’s parents are coming. Her sister and brother-in-law. Gabriel, obviously. Us.”
I counted silently.
“That isn’t a small dinner,” I said. “That’s a dinner without me.”
There was a pause.
Behind me sat a cream-colored folder containing the deed I had signed three days earlier.
Neither Hugo nor his wife knew about it.
“Mom, please don’t make this harder.”
“I’m not making anything harder. I’m asking why your mother isn’t welcome at your Christmas Eve table.”
“Carla’s parents are very formal. They lived in France for several years. They’re used to a certain kind of holiday dinner.”
I almost laughed.
Instead I asked, “And I am what? A threat to the silverware?”
“That’s not what I said.”
“You said the dinner is for your wife’s family. I am your family.”
“Mom.”
His voice softened, but not with warmth. It was the tone used to manage someone inconvenient.
“Couldn’t you have dinner with a friend? Or stay home, make something you like, watch a movie? We’ll come by another day.”
For a moment, only the refrigerator hummed.
My son was forty-two. I had cared for him through childhood illnesses, school, college applications, unemployment, and adulthood. I had babysat Gabriel so he and Carla could travel and spent five years pretending not to notice the ways his wife made it clear I embarrassed her.
