She didn’t want praise.
She wanted the work to matter.
Months later, Carlos returned to the office.
He walked through the doors wearing his clean uniform.
The same place.
The same floors.
The same offices.
But he was different.
Laura saw him approaching.
“Welcome back.”
Carlos smiled.
“Thank you, ma’am.”
She shook her head.
“No more ‘ma’am.’”
Carlos laughed.
“Then what should I call you?”
“Laura.”
He smiled.
“Thank you, Laura.”
That afternoon, Carlos gave her a small wooden box.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a simple handmade plaque.
Laura read the words engraved across it.
TRUE WEALTH IS WHAT YOU LEAVE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE.
She looked at Carlos.
“You made this?”
He nodded.
“I wanted to thank you.”
Laura smiled.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“But I wanted to.”
Laura looked at the plaque for a long moment.
She thought about the woman she had been before that rainy morning.
