Laura continued visiting them.
At first, Carlos was uncomfortable.
He didn’t know how to accept kindness.
But slowly, the relationship changed.
Laura wasn’t just his employer anymore.
She had become someone his family trusted.
And Carlos had changed Laura too.
One afternoon, Laura called Patricia into her office.
“I want you to prepare something for me.”
“What?”
“A new program.”
“For the company?”
Laura nodded.
“An emergency support program for employees and their families.”
Patricia looked surprised.
“What kind of support?”
“Medical emergencies. Food assistance. Temporary financial help. Anything that can keep a family from falling apart because one person becomes sick.”
Patricia smiled.
“You’re serious?”
“Very.”
And that was how Laura’s foundation began.
She called it The Second Chance Foundation.
At first, it helped a few employees.
Then dozens.
Then families outside the company began receiving assistance as well.
Laura never put her name on the building.
