If you’re finished using a small countertop appliance, there’s often no reason to keep it energized until tomorrow.
Unplug it.
Put the cord away neatly.
Done!
One Important Exception
Some appliances are designed to remain connected because they
have timers, clocks, programmable functions, or other features you rely on.
If unplugging the device resets settings you actually use, there’s no need to make your life more complicated.
The goal is sensible energy and safety habits—not unplugging for the sake of unplugging.
Appliance #2: Chargers and Power Adapters
Chargers are another easy place to develop an unplugging habit.
A phone charger or other power adapter may continue consuming a small amount of electricity when connected to the outlet without actively charging a device.
With a modern, reputable charger, this
standby consumption is generally very small.
So why unplug?
There are a few good reasons.
Unplug Damaged Chargers
This is much more important than worrying about tiny standby energy use.
