THE CALL THAT STOPPED EVERYTHING
Six months after my divorce was officially finalized, I was seated at the head of a conference table in downtown Dallas, getting ready to sign the biggest contract of my career, when my phone suddenly rang.
Under normal circumstances, I would never answer an unfamiliar number during a meeting.
That morning, for some reason I still can’t explain, I did.
“Mr. Redmond, my name is Dr. Naomi Kline. I’m calling from St. Catherine Medical Center. Your son was delivered prematurely this morning.”
For several moments, I genuinely believed the doctor had reached the wrong person.
Across the table were nine investors, two attorneys, and my longtime business partner. A $940 million development agreement sat open before me.
My pen froze above the signature line.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “My what?”
The doctor paused.
“Your son. His mother is Elise Rowan.”
The entire room seemed to vanish around me.
