My Wife Abandoned Our Triplets for Another Man—21 Years Later, Three Mysterious Velvet Boxes Arrived With One Shocking Condition

The Final Goodbye

Abigail held firm and refused to go to the hospice center, but Chloe and Harper decided that they needed to see her one last time. I drove them to the facility, fully intending to wait quietly in the parking lot while they went inside. However, right as we parked, Harper reached out and grabbed my hand.

“Please come inside with us, Dad,” Harper pleaded softly. “We really need you there.”

So I unbuckled my seatbelt and walked through the quiet hospice doors beside them. When we stepped into the room, Evelyn looked remarkably smaller and more fragile than the woman I had remembered in my mind. That realization genuinely surprised me because for twenty-one years, she had occupied an enormous, towering space in my anger. Now, she was simply a frail, sick woman lying quietly in a medical bed.

Her tired eyes immediately locked onto the girls, and tears began streaming down her pale cheeks. “Chloe?” she whispered weakly.

Chloe nodded her head slowly. “Yes, it is me.”

Evelyn looked over at Harper with trembling lips. “And Harper.”

Harper sat down quietly on the edge of the chair beside the bed while Evelyn glanced nervously toward the open doorway. “Where is Abigail?”

Chloe’s face tightened as she answered bluntly, “She did not want to come here today.”

Evelyn closed her eyes tightly for a moment, taking a deep breath. “Okay, I understand.”

Then her eyes finally shifted over to me standing near the wall. “Lucas.”

I had not heard her speak my name out loud in twenty-one long years. “Why did you choose to reach out now?” I asked directly.

She looked back at the girls with a weak expression. “Because I am dying.”

“That is why you sent the velvet boxes today,” I said calmly. “That is not the reason why you waited nine full years after learning the truth.”

Evelyn nodded her head slowly in agreement. “No, it is not.”

“Then tell us why,” I pressed gently.

Her answer came out as a quiet whisper. “Because every single year that I waited made the following year feel impossible to face.”

Chloe wiped a tear from her face. “That is your entire explanation?”

Evelyn looked straight at Chloe. “No, the uglier and honest answer is that I only wanted to return when I could still foolishly imagine you wanting me in your lives.”

Chloe flinched slightly at those blunt words.
