“When I finally learned that Brandon had lied to me, you were already twelve years old,” Evelyn explained painfully. “You had a loving father, good friends, a happy home, and complete lives that I had done nothing to earn a place in.”
“So you just chose to watch us from afar instead of being our mother?” Chloe asked.
Evelyn began sobbing uncontrollably. “Yes, I did.”
Harper’s voice was barely audible over the sound of the medical equipment in the room. “Why did you never send any of those birthday letters to us?”
“Because sending those letters would have required me to face whatever harsh rejection came back from you,” Evelyn confessed.
That answer stung deeply because of how utterly honest it was. Evelyn had not stayed away to protect our daughters from emotional turmoil. She had stayed away because the fear of personal rejection terrified her far more than her absence hurt her children.
Chloe stood up from her chair slowly. “I really thought there would be a much better reason than that.”
Evelyn nodded sadly. “So did I, Chloe.”
Harper then asked about the money in the bank account. “Why save every single penny for twenty-one years?”
Evelyn glanced toward me briefly. “At first, it was driven purely by intense guilt. Later on, it was because I knew I had no right to show up one day and ask your father to carry the heavy financial burden of my past mistakes.”
“You could have easily helped him financially when he was struggling so badly,” Chloe pointed out coldly.
“I know,” Evelyn whispered.
“Dad worked grueling night shifts for years just to feed us,” Chloe continued.
“I know,” Evelyn repeated softly.
“He sold his beloved pickup truck when Harper desperately needed her emergency surgery,” Chloe said with rising emotion.
I looked over at Chloe in surprise because I had never explicitly told the girls why I had sold my favorite truck years ago, but they had clearly figured it out on their own as they grew older.
Evelyn’s face completely crumpled in shame. “I know.”
Chloe shook her head in disappointment. “No, you know that now. Dad knew it back then when he was struggling all alone.”
That single statement was the precise moment that completely broke Evelyn’s composure, causing her to cover her face with her hands and sob hysterically
