Since the baby was born, my mother-in-law had repeatedly offered to watch her instead of us using daycare.
I had thanked her.
But Caleb and I had already chosen a daycare months earlier.
Or at least I thought we had.
“I can keep her five days a week,” she said. “Why pay strangers when I’m available?”
“We already arranged daycare.”
She looked directly at Caleb.
“You didn’t tell her?”
I turned toward him.
“Tell me what?”
“Jess, maybe we should talk later.”
“Caleb.”
He let out a long breath.
Then my husband admitted he had canceled our daycare reservation.
For several seconds, I thought I must have misunderstood.
“You did what?”
“I canceled it.”
“Without discussing it with me?”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“Before you went back to work.”
I laughed once.
There was nothing funny about it.
“So after it was already too late to find another place?”
His mother stepped in.
