Judge Harrison broke the seal.
The contents had not appeared out of nowhere. Rachel had filed an emergency motion three days earlier after our forensic accountant authenticated several records. Julian’s attorney had received formal notice of the filing, but the supporting exhibits remained temporarily sealed because they contained account numbers, business records, and material connected to suspected financial fraud.
Julian knew a motion had been filed.
He simply assumed it was another desperate attempt to delay the hearing.
He had no idea what we had found.
Judge Harrison lifted the first page.
His eyebrows rose.
He turned to the next.
Then another.
And suddenly, a short laugh escaped him.
It wasn’t cruel.
It sounded more like disbelief.
The entire courtroom seemed to freeze.
Julian sat forward.
Chloe’s smile disappeared.
Wendy looked offended that the universe had produced an event she had not personally approved.
Judge Harrison composed himself.
“Well,” he said, looking over his glasses. “This is certainly an interesting development.”
Julian turned sharply toward his attorney, Martin Cole.
“What is that?”
Cole whispered, “I don’t know yet.”
Judge Harrison continued reading.
A minute later, he placed the first stack down.
“Before we proceed with the final distribution arguments, the court needs to address newly authenticated financial materials submitted by Mrs. Sterling.”
Cole rose immediately.
“Your Honor, we object. We were not provided the contents of those sealed exhibits.”
“You were notified of the emergency filing,” Judge Harrison replied.
“We were not given an opportunity—”
“You were invited to respond to the motion yesterday afternoon. Your office filed a two-page opposition calling Mrs. Sterling’s allegations speculative.”
Cole’s jaw tightened.
Judge Harrison turned toward Rachel.
“Ms. Morgan?”
Rachel stood.
