Richard stepped toward her.
“Please stay.”
For one moment, Susan almost did.
Five years of habit pulled at her.
Then she remembered his words from earlier.
I know.
Richard had known.
He knew who paid the bills.
He knew who owned the property.
He knew his mother had been crossing boundaries.
And he had chosen silence because it was easier for him.
Susan looked at him.
“You don’t need me to stay tonight. You need to decide whether avoiding conflict with your mother is worth having a marriage where your wife absorbs all of it.”
Then she walked out.
PART 4 – SIX WORDS
Before midnight, Richard sent twenty-three messages.
At first, he defended Margaret.
She shouldn’t have touched the thermostat, but all the legal talk scared her.
Then he minimized everything.
Are we really throwing away five years over an AC setting?
After midnight, his tone softened.
Come home. We’ll talk privately.
