“I know exactly how long we’ve been married.”
“And you’re willing to destroy five years because Mom switched off the air-conditioning?”
Susan lifted her purse.
“One thermostat isn’t destroying our marriage. It simply exposed how ridiculous things have become. I shouldn’t need your mother’s permission to be comfortable in a house I inherited from my father.”
She carried the suitcase downstairs.
Margaret was waiting near the foyer.
“If you walk out that door, don’t expect everything to be exactly as you left it.”
Susan stopped.
“That is an excellent reason to put everything in writing tomorrow.”
Margaret’s face reddened.
“You can’t just evict family.”
“I’m not doing anything tonight except leaving.”
“I have rights here.”
Susan opened the door.
“Then an attorney can explain exactly what rights everyone has, and we’ll follow the proper process instead of inventing rules in my dining room.”
