“That’s a good man, sweetheart,” she told me with a soft smile. “Hold onto him tight.”
I fully planned to do just that, and at that point, my biggest concerns in life were wedding centerpieces, seating arrangements, and whether the reception napkins should be one shade darker.
Then one unexpected phone call from the police department instantly shattered everything we knew.
“Ma’am, there’s been a severe accident on the highway,” the officer’s voice was careful, quiet, and almost painfully gentle over the line. “Your parents… I’m so very sorry.”
I sat right down on the floor because my legs simply stopped working, staring blindly at the kitchen rug. Tristan was sitting on the couch nearby, looking at something on his smartphone before he slowly looked up at me with a frown.
“The twins,” I whispered, my throat feeling completely raw. “Where are my little brothers?”
“They’re at St. Anthony’s Medical Center in downtown St. Louis,” the officer replied gently. “They were also in the car, but they are alive and currently being treated.”
