I Divorced Him Three Months Pregnant and Disappeared—Ten Years Later, He Presented an Award to the Son He Never Knew

“Sign it right now, Nora,” Lucas said, pushing the pen toward me. “I have to get to the airport because someone is waiting for me.”

Those words were enough to make me understand that our marriage had been over for months, even if I was only now allowing myself to accept it.

Across the polished surface of his office desk, Lucas Albright slid the divorce agreement toward me. We had spent six years as husband and wife, and I was nearly three months pregnant with our first child while he remained completely unaware.

Inside my leather handbag was a white envelope holding the very first ultrasound image of our baby. I had intended to show it to him after we finished signing the papers, foolishly picturing the tenderness that might appear on his face when he learned that the day we had talked about for so long had finally come.

Before I could speak, his phone vibrated against the wooden tabletop. A familiar name appeared across the screen, and my heart immediately dropped.

It was Alyssa, his high school sweetheart and the woman his family had always spoken about as though I had simply occupied the place that rightfully belonged to her.

Lucas picked up immediately, and his expression softened in an instant. “Yes, I am almost done here. Don’t worry, I am coming straight to pick you up.”

His voice was gentle and patient, carrying a warmth I hadn’t heard directed toward me in a very long time.

When the call ended, he looked back at me and gestured toward the documents. “The house in San Diego is registered in your name, and you can keep the car as well. I will also transfer three million dollars to your account so we do not have any trouble later.”
