His eyes lifted.
Hannah whispered, “Ethan, I think our baby was born alive.”
Before he could answer, someone knocked.
Hard.
A security officer entered.
“Dr. Caldwell, we have a situation downstairs.”
Ethan folded the document.
“What situation?”
“A man tried to access the NICU using falsified credentials.”
Hannah turned white.
“Who?”
The officer hesitated.
“He was detained, but he claims he’s family.”
Ethan frowned.
“What name?”
“Richard Caldwell.”
Hannah made a terrified sound.
But the officer wasn’t finished.
“He also had something with him.”
“What?”
“A sealed legal envelope addressed to you.”
Ethan looked at Hannah.
Five minutes later, the envelope was placed in his hands.
Richard had refused to speak.
He had only repeated one sentence.
Give Ethan the papers before Mother destroys them.
Ethan tore the envelope open.
Inside was a DNA report.
Dated three weeks earlier.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His hands began trembling.
