“Do you need help with your luggage?”
He smiled.
“That joke is terrible.”
“I’ve been saving it for a year.”
They entered the ballroom.
Isabela was with Sebastián for the evening.
The conference ended at nine.
Alejandro and Lucía walked onto the rooftop terrace.
Mexico City stretched around them in lights.
He did not have a ring.
That mattered.
He had considered bringing one.
Then decided it would turn the evening into a demand.
Instead, he asked:
“Are you happy?”
Lucía thought.
“Yes.”
“With your life?”
“Yes.”
“With me in it?”
She looked at him.
“Most days.”
He laughed.
“I’ll take it.”
She became serious.
“I don’t want our old marriage back.”
Alejandro nodded.
“Neither do I.”
“I loved you.”
“But I disappeared inside your life.”
“Your house.”
“Your staff.”
“Your schedule.”
“Your money.”
“Then Ramón took advantage of that.”
Alejandro looked down.
