Five years after the divorce, my ex-husband chose the seat next to mine in first class — there were four empty ones

And he said:

"Every single thing else fitted. The meetings, the hotel, the eleven o'clock messages, the way you went quiet in November. All of it fitted and I had it in a row and I could look at it.

"And then you didn't take anything. And that never fitted anywhere. For five years.

"So I put it in a drawer and I did not open the drawer, because if I opened it I was going to have to look at the rest of it again."

And then he said: "I knew at some level in about 2022. I've known for four years that something in it was wrong and I did not check, because checking would have meant I'd got it wrong about the whole of it."

Four years.

That man had one loose thread and he knew it was a loose thread and he spent four years not pulling it.
