Five years after the divorce, my ex-husband chose the seat next to mine in first class — there were four empty ones.

I am Soraya Kerrigan and I had not been in a room with Theodore Aldritch since a solicitor's office in the July of 2021.

Then on the seventeenth of September this year he came through the curtain on a flight into Marrowbridge.

We saw each other at about the same second.

And he said, to nobody: "Oh, you have got to be joking."

I closed my book.

"Believe me. If I'd known you were on this flight I'd have taken another one."

And then he sat down next to me.

Four empty seats in that cabin. I counted them while he was putting his bag up.

I said, "You could sit somewhere else."

"I could."

"So why don't you."

And he did the smile and said: "Five years. I thought we might catch up."
