No judgment that could give Grant back the years stolen from him.
Justice mattered.

It couldn’t reverse death.
It could only finally tell the truth.
CHAPTER 16 — THE PLACE WHERE SUNLIGHT NEVER REACHES
One year after Benjamin came home, we returned to Pine Hollow.
All five daughters came with us.
Benjamin drove beside Hannah.
I followed in Grant’s old pickup truck, which I had kept in storage because I couldn’t bear to sell it.
The mountain road looked different in daylight.
Less frightening.
Almost peaceful.
But I still remembered every detail from the day the police told me my family was gone.
We stopped at the memorial beside the ravine.
Three small stone markers stood beneath the trees.
Grant.
Nathan.
Oliver.
Benjamin had once had a marker there too.
We had removed it after his return.
He stood before the memorial for a long time.
