Five years after my husband and our 3 sons di:ed in a terrible storm

Inside lay a folded document and a silver key.

My hands trembled.

The document was a notarized statement bearing Grant’s signature.

It identified the location of a secure deposit box in another state and named an attorney authorized to release its contents if Grant died or disappeared.

The attorney’s name was Margaret Ellis.

Rebecca located her within hours.

Margaret had retired shortly after Grant’s death.

She was now living in Oregon.

When I spoke to her, she began crying.

“I’ve been waiting for someone from your family to call.”

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“I tried.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“I sent three certified letters after the accident.

Every one was returned.”

“Returned?”

“Marked undeliverable.”

I looked toward the guest room where Miles had slept.

Margaret continued.

“Then a man claiming to represent your family called and said you wanted no further contact.”

“What man?”
