The letter continued:
Emily, I don’t know how much time I have.
I made a terrible mistake trusting Miles Carter.
I believed he was helping me uncover something important.
Instead, I discovered that he was involved.
The money isn’t what it seems.
The accident wasn’t an accident waiting to happen.
And the cabin isn’t safe anymore.
If anything happens to me, don’t accept the first explanation.
Don’t trust anyone who tells you I was driving too fast.
I would never risk our boys’ lives.
My eyes filled with tears.
For five years, those last words had haunted me.
Excessive speed.
Poor judgment.
A reckless decision.
That was what the police report claimed.
Even when I defended Grant’s character, people gently reminded me that accidents happened to good drivers.
Eventually, I stopped arguing.
But now my husband’s own handwriting was telling me that the explanation had been a lie.
