Five years after my husband and our 3 sons di:ed in a terrible storm

But one thing was already clear.

The original investigation had been deliberately compromised.

Miles had lied.

And the recordings showed he had been present at the crash scene before emergency services officially arrived.

I asked Rebecca whether Nathan and Oliver had suffered.

She took my hand.

“We’re still examining everything.”

I nodded, though the uncertainty hurt.

There are questions a mother asks because she needs answers.

And questions she asks even though she’s terrified of what those answers might be.

I thought about Nathan’s college applications.

Oliver’s telescope.

The three empty chairs at our Christmas table.

I had spent five years trying to imagine a world where their deaths had meaning.

Now I understood something painful.

Their deaths didn’t need to teach me a lesson.

They didn’t need to happen for a reason.

They were terrible crimes committed against people who deserved to live.
