Sophie sobbed.
“Mommy!”
I pressed the phone against my ear.
“I’m here, baby.
I’m here.”
Then Miles shouted something that made every person at our table go silent.
“Your father should have handed over the evidence when he had the chance!”
Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.
Miles continued.
“He thought he could destroy my life.
Now your mother wants to do the same thing!”
A loud crash followed.
The bathroom door was breaking.
Then I heard sirens.
Several.
Growing louder.
Miles stopped.
For one beautiful second, there was silence.
Then he ran.
The responding officers found Claire and Sophie locked inside the bathroom, terrified but physically unharmed.
Miles had escaped through the garage.
His vehicle was gone.
A statewide alert went out.
I wanted to return home immediately.
Rebecca refused.
“He’s dangerous, Emily.
He knows the evidence exists.
We need to keep you safe.”
I thought of Benjamin.
