Five years after my husband and our 3 sons di:ed in a terrible storm

Hannah looked at me sharply.

“Not the local police.”

She was right.

Miles had been an officer in that department for almost twenty years.

He knew everyone.

He had investigated the crash.

He had controlled the evidence.

We couldn’t walk into his station and announce what we’d discovered.

Then Hannah remembered someone.

“Mom, Rachel’s friend works for the state attorney general.”

“Who?”

“Her name is Rebecca Sloan.

She’s an investigator.”

I nodded.

“Call her.”

As Hannah reached for her phone, mine vibrated.

Miles.

Hope you’re enjoying your little trip.

My stomach tightened.

Then another message arrived.

Funny thing.

I drove past your house, and Claire says you’re not visiting any friend she knows.

A third message appeared.

Emily, where are you?

And finally:

Don’t make me come looking.

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Rebecca Sloan met us at a diner forty miles away.
