Five years after my husband and our 3 sons di:ed in a terrible storm

I laughed.

“And where is that?”

“Under the place where we first promised to grow old.”

At the time, I thought he was being romantic.

Now I remembered something else.

There had been a small wooden bench beneath the cottage’s back porch.

Grant had carved our initials into it.

E + G.

Then he had written a date beneath them.

June 17.

Our anniversary.

Bluebird.

Seventeen.

Six.

My pulse quickened.

June 17.

The sixth floor?

Six feet?

Six steps?

Hannah leaned forward.

“Mom, we need to find that cottage.”

I was already reaching for my laptop.

CHAPTER 4 — THE NAME BEHIND THE MONEY

The Bluebird Cottage still existed.

It stood beside Blackwater Lake, approximately forty minutes from Pine Hollow.

The owner had changed, but the property was now rented through a small vacation company.

I booked it for one night under Hannah’s name.

We agreed to leave that afternoon.

Before we could, my phone rang.
