Step 5: Be consistent for at least a few weeks
Research shows that meaningful changes usually come from repetition over time, not one perfect session. Small daily efforts often beat occasional intense efforts.
How to Know If You Are Doing Too Much
Some discomfort is normal when rebuilding movement tolerance. But pain should not spike sharply during exercise or leave you much worse the next day. That is usually a sign to scale back.
Use this simple rule: mild effort is acceptable, sharp pain is not. If the knee becomes more swollen, unstable, or painful after activity, reduce the load and speak with a clinician.
Here are signs you should be extra cautious:
The knee is hot, red, or significantly swollen
The joint locks or gives way
Pain wakes you up at night
You cannot bear weight normally
The pain followed an injury or fall
