For several seconds, there was dead air. Then I heard Chloe whisper frantically in the background: “Hang up! Just hang up!”
“There’s one more thing, Daniel,” I added before he could disconnect.
I looked down at the empty velvet case sitting on my counter. “The bracelet Chloe is wearing in that photo? It’s a replica.”
“What?”
“My mother’s actual diamond bracelet has been sitting in a bank vault for eight months. What you stole out of the safe last night is a two hundred dollar cubic zirconia reproduction.”
I heard Chloe let out a sharp curse in the background.
Daniel’s breathing turned ragged. “Audrey… listen to me. We can fix this. We can talk about this like adults.”
“No, Daniel.”
“You’re overreacting!”
“You texted me a photograph using stolen property while attempting to flee the country with my company’s assets,” I said flatly. “You thought you were leaving me with nothing. The problem, Daniel, is that you underestimated the wrong woman.”
