After I made a harmless joke in front of his colleagues, my husband embarrassed me and leaned close. “Know your place,” he said coldly. He expected laughter, but the entire room fell completely silent instead.

The entire executive lounge went silent after my husband publicly M0CKED me over a harmless joke.

Then Richard leaned close and said quietly:

“Know your place.”

He expected me to look embarrassed.

Instead, I looked around at the phones still raised in the room and smiled.

“You just made a very public mistake.”

Richard had no idea that several people had recorded everything.

And he knew even less about the real reason I was attending his company event that night.

We were standing inside the executive lounge of Halcyon Dynamics, the defense-technology company where my husband, Richard Mercer, had spent fifteen years climbing toward the position of regional president.

Champagne sparkled beneath enormous chandeliers.

Executives surrounded him.

Junior managers laughed a little too enthusiastically at everything he said.

Richard loved rooms like this.

He loved attention.

He loved being treated as though he were the most important person in them.

That evening, he had been bragging about his negotiation skills.

“Nobody closes contracts as aggressively as I do,” he said.

I smiled.

“Except when the cable company raises our bill. Then suddenly Richard needs me.”

Several people laughed.

Richard didn’t.
