After Gallbladder Removal: 3 Conditions You Could Develop — Why You Should Avoid the Surgery When Possible

For most people, gallbladder removal does not cause the liver to stop functioning properly.
Surgery

The liver continues producing bile normally after surgery.

Research has investigated possible associations between gallbladder removal and metabolic or liver conditions, but an association does not necessarily mean the surgery itself directly causes these diseases. People requiring gallbladder surgery may already share risk factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, abnormal cholesterol levels, or metabolic disease.

It would therefore be inaccurate to say that gallbladder removal automatically causes liver disease.

Can Gallbladder Removal Cause Digestive Problems Years Later?

It can in some people, although most patients do well.

Health Conditions

Long-term symptoms may include:

recurrent diarrhea

intolerance of particularly fatty meals

bloating

indigestion

abdominal discomfort

If these symptoms appear or persist long after surgery, they should not simply be accepted as unavoidable.

Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, bile acid diarrhea, celiac disease, pancreatic disorders, reflux, or other digestive problems may need to be considered.
