The officer rolled his eyes.
Then Victoria spoke again.
“Please reach into the right pocket of my shorts. I can’t get to it with my hands behind my back.”
The two officers exchanged confused glances.
“What do you have in there?” the taller one asked.
“You’ll know when you see it.”
He reached into her pocket.
His fingers touched a small leather wallet.
He pulled it out.
Then he opened it.
The man’s entire expression changed.
His partner leaned closer.
A second later, both officers froze.
Because inside the wallet was an identification card bearing the seal of the United States Department of Justice.
And beneath it was a second card.
The name on it was Victoria Lane.
Federal Investigator.
Office of Inspector General.
The taller officer’s hand began to shake.
Victoria looked over her shoulder.
“Now,” she said quietly, “perhaps we can discuss why you stopped me.”
