The realization made Victoria’s hands tremble.
Not because she was afraid for herself.
But because she knew what could happen to an ordinary person who did not have the ability to fight back.
Someone without legal knowledge.
Someone without a supervisor.
Someone who could not afford an attorney.
Someone who might have believed the officers had the right to do whatever they wanted.
Victoria replied calmly.
“I have already provided my statement to federal investigators.”
“This is a local matter.”
“No,” Victoria said. “It may involve federal financial misconduct and obstruction of an active investigation.”
The line went silent.
Then the caller changed his tone.
“We are simply trying to understand what happened.”
“You can review the recording.”
“We would prefer to hear your account directly.”
“You will receive it through the proper channels.”
