“You ruined my mother’s dress.”
Her eyes sharpened, but she didn’t deny it.
“Prove it.”
That was her third mistake.
She leaned closer, expensive perfume surrounding her.
“Adrian is emotional. He thinks love is permanent. It isn’t. Assets are.”
“What are the amended trust papers?”
Her expression changed for half a second.
That was enough.
“You’ve been snooping.”
“I’ve been working.”
“You are an employee.”
“No, Evelyn. I was retained by the independent directors.”
She stopped.
Six weeks earlier, two Harrow board members had hired my firm after noticing unexplained transfers.
Adrian knew I was examining company records, but even he didn’t know the board had authorized a formal fraud investigation three days earlier.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“You think you can threaten me on my son’s wedding day?”
“I haven’t threatened you once.”
Her smile returned, but it was brittle.
“Then enjoy the ceremony while it lasts.”
