Mark followed hesitantly at a respectful distance, clutching his flight clipboard against his chest like an absolute lifeline in an alien universe. Chloe, the lead flight attendant, ran down the metal steps, clutching Pauline's abandoned cloth handbag with both pale hands.
"Wait, ma'am! You forgot your bag in the galley!" Chloe called out breathlessly, running toward the waiting convoy of dark military vehicles. A young Air Force captain gently stepped forward to intercept her, but Pauline raised a single finger to wave her through.
"Let her come," Pauline said softly to the armed guards surrounding the staff sedan with practiced, defensive vigilance. "This young woman kept three hundred frightened people calm while Mark and I were wrestling with that dying compressor."
Chloe handed the purse to Pauline, her eyes wide as dinner plates as she glanced around at the armed base personnel. "The passengers are shouting your name back there, ma'am. They want to know who you are. What should we tell them?"
Pauline smiled faintly, touching Chloe’s wrist with a hand that had once sustained twelve gravities in screaming prototype atmospheric dives. "Tell them an old grandmother who dislikes bumpy turbulence simply helped a young flight crew find their runway."
General Vance opened the rear door of the sedan, gesturing for Pauline, Chloe, and the utterly humbled Mark to enter the vehicle. "Actually, Miss Chloe, you can tell them they were brought down by the very first woman to exceed Mach 4."
Chloe's jaw dropped open as she climbed into the leather interior, her breath catching as she stared across at Pauline's profile. Mark slumped into the corner seat, staring down at his polished black shoes, unable to look either veteran in the eye.
The convoy accelerated smoothly across the perimeter taxiway, bypassing the civilian passenger handling facilities and heading directly toward the high-security bunker complex. Massive concrete shelters rose from the desert floor, shielded by high barbed-wire fences and automated surveillance towers tracking every move.
