Nathan came down from the stage.
Then into the aisle.
Whispers started behind me.
My father sat up straighter.
Mom glanced around, probably trying to work out which important person sat nearby.
I shut my eyes for half a second.
I had spent years keeping the two halves of my life apart.
Not out of shame.
Because I had learned that titles changed how people listened.
I wanted my family to love Emily.
Not a uniform.
Not a rank.
Not stories they could repeat at dinner parties.
Just me.
They had made their choice.
And now Nathan Hayes was about to make sticking to it impossible.
He stopped right in front of my chair.
The whole tent had gone quiet.
I stood because instinct beat preference.
Nathan brought his heels together.
Then lifted his right hand.
Sharp.
Precise.
A formal salute.
I heard my mother gasp.
I returned it automatically.
His hand dropped.
So did mine.
Then Commander Nathaniel Hayes looked straight at me and said, loudly enough for my whole family to hear:
“Ma’am, we’ve been waiting for you.”
PART 2: THE NAME ON THE OTHER LIST
Nobody moved.
For a few seconds, the only sound under the tent was canvas stirring in the ocean breeze.
I wanted to vanish.
Not because I was ashamed of who I was.
Because I knew exactly what would come next.
My mother’s face had gone perfectly still.
Dad stared at Nathan’s insignia.
Then at me.
Then back at Nathan.
Ryan looked as if someone had hit him square in the chest.
I lowered my voice.
“Nathan.”
His mouth almost twitched.
“That tone usually means I’m about to be told I’ve made a tactical error.”
A couple of senior chiefs nearby smiled.
“This is Ryan’s ceremony,” I said.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“I chose to sit here.”
“So I was informed.”
His gaze flicked briefly toward the security officer.
The poor man looked deeply uncomfortable.
Nathan went on.
