Suddenly, the baby began crying again.
One of the children tugged on Carlos’s shirt.

Carlos looked down.
“I’m hungry.”
Carlos closed his eyes for a second.
Laura saw it.
That tiny expression of pain.
He looked at the child and forced a smile.
“Just a little while longer, buddy.”
Laura couldn’t bear it.
She took out her phone.
Carlos looked at her, confused.
“Ma’am?”
Laura called Patricia.
“Patricia?”
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Cancel all my meetings today.”
Patricia was silent.
“All of them?”
“All of them.”
Laura looked at Elena.
“And contact the best private hospital in the city.”
Carlos’s eyes widened.
Laura continued.
“Tell them we’re transferring a patient today.”
Carlos immediately shook his head.
“Ma’am, no. I can’t afford a private hospital.”
