ON DIVORCE DAY, MY EX SKIPPED COURT FOR HIS MISTRESS’S DELIVERY ROOM. RIGHT AFTER THE BABY WAS BORN, HE REACHED FOR IT. AND THE DOCTOR SAID: “CONGRATULATIONS. BUT THIS BABY’S SKIN COLOR…”

Because Mark had forgotten one thing.

Before becoming his wife, I had been the youngest forensic accountant in my firm’s history. Before betrayal taught me to smile through humiliation, my career taught me how money lies, how signatures reveal fear, and how arrogant men leave trails when they assume women are too broken to follow them.

So I followed his emergency.

Mark’s mother spotted me first at the hospital.

Evelyn stood outside Serena’s suite with a blue gift bag, wearing diamonds bright enough to overwhelm any trace of sympathy.

“You have no shame,” she hissed. “Coming here today?”

Through the glass, I watched Mark lean over Serena and kiss her damp forehead.

“My divorce hearing was today,” I said.

Evelyn sneered. “And his child was born today. Finally, something that matters.”

Then the baby cried.

A sharp, unmistakably alive sound.

Mark leaned down with a smile full of possessive tenderness.

The doctor glanced from the newborn to Mark, then toward Serena.

“Congratulations,” he said carefully. “But this baby’s skin color… we should discuss a few things privately.”

Mark’s smile vanished.

Across the hall, I lowered my gaze.

Not from surprise.

From confirmation.

Serena recovered first.

“She’s exhausted,” Mark snapped at the doctor. “Don’t start some medical panic.”

The doctor remained composed. “I’m saying the baby appears healthy, but there are questions you may want addressed with appropriate testing.”

“Testing?” Evelyn barked. “For what?”

Serena pulled the blanket closer. “Mark, don’t let them ruin this moment.”

But Mark had already changed. The pride disappeared from his face, revealing something smaller and uglier beneath it.

He stared at the newborn.

The baby was beautiful. Innocent. Completely blameless for the lies surrounding his first moments of life.

But he didn’t look like Mark.

And he didn’t fit Serena’s story either.

Mark slowly turned toward her. “Serena.”

Her tears came instantly. “Don’t you dare.”
