“She told me I would never have to be ashamed of myself.”
I looked down at the bracelet.
Ethan continued.
“And I made her a promise.”
His voice trembled.
“I wouldn’t let other people’s fear decide who I became.”
Someone in the audience began to cry.
Then another person.
Ethan took a breath.
“This dress isn’t meant to make anyone angry.”
He looked down at it.
“I know people laughed.”
A few students lowered their heads.
“I heard them.”
He looked directly toward the back of the auditorium.
“But I still walked.”
Nobody laughed this time.
“I walked because my mom spent eighteen years teaching me that being brave doesn’t mean nobody will hurt you.”
He paused.
“It means you keep going anyway.”
I could barely see through my tears.
Then Ethan looked at me.
“And I wanted her to know that she kept her promise.”
