"My son and daughter in law laughed when I walked into the courtroom. “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing,”

By whom?

We all knew the answer.

But she said it anyway.

“Martin.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“He wanted access to Arthur’s records.

Arthur had spent years tracing property transfers linked to Richard Cole’s old network.

When Richard died, Martin inherited everything—companies, attorneys, shell corporations, favors.”

“And you?”

I asked.

“I worked in one of Meridian’s legal offices.”

She wiped her face.

“I met Daniel at a charity event because Martin arranged it.”

Daniel stood.

“Everything was fake?”

Vanessa looked at him for a long time.

“Not everything.”

He laughed bitterly.

“That’s what liars say.”

“I did love you.”

“You tried to steal my mother’s house.”

“I was supposed to help get the guardianship approved.

That was all.”

“That was all?”

Her face crumpled.

“Then Arthur found the ledger.”

Mara resumed the video.

Arthur continued.

“Richard Cole spent decades buying distressed properties through coercion, fraudulent probate filings, and manipulated guardianship proceedings.

I believe his son continued the operation.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“I also believe **someone inside the courthouse has been helping him**.”

Every eye turned toward Mercer.

The judge stared at the floor.

Arthur continued.

“Eleanor, I never told you about Daniel because I thought the truth would destroy him.

I was wrong.

Secrets don’t disappear.

They wait.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Agent Ellison turned toward Mercer.

“Judge Adrian Mercer, you are being detained pending federal questioning concerning conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction, and judicial corruption.”

Mercer smiled faintly.

“You have no idea what you’re touching.”

Mara’s expression didn’t change.

“I hear that a lot.”

Two agents stepped toward him.

And then the courtroom doors opened again.

A third agent rushed inside.

“Mara.”

She turned.

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

He looked directly at me.

“Martin Cole knows she’s here.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

The agent hesitated.

“Because he’s watching the courtroom feed.”

Mara’s face hardened.

“There is no public feed.”

The agent swallowed.

“I know.”

That was when the lights went out.

And somewhere in the darkness, Vanessa screamed.

# **PART 4 — THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR ME**

Emergency lights flashed red along the courtroom walls.

People shouted.

Chairs scraped.

Someone grabbed my shoulder.

I swung my cane hard.

A man cursed.

“Mrs.

Vance!

Federal agent!”

“Then identify yourself before touching old women in the dark.”

Even in chaos, Mara almost laughed.

Then a gunshot exploded from the hallway.

Everyone dropped.

Daniel crawled toward me.

“Mom!”

I had not heard him call me that with fear in his voice since he was twelve.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Mara pulled me behind the judge’s bench.

“Stay down.”

“What about Vanessa?”

Daniel shouted her name.

No answer.

When the emergency system finally restored partial lighting, **Vanessa was gone**.

So was Curtis Hale.

Judge Mercer remained under guard.

Mara cursed under her breath.

“They had help.”

Daniel stared at the empty chair beside him.

“She ran.”

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“She was taken.”

“How do you know?”

Because I had seen Vanessa’s face just before the lights failed.

She had not been preparing to escape.

She had been looking toward the rear doors.
