It did not show my parents’ names either.
The page Elena Brooks turned across the dining table listed the Eleanor Johnson Testamentary Trust as the legal owner of the house.
Beneath that, in language my parents had spent years hoping I would never read, it identified me as the sole vested beneficiary.
Madison stared at the document as if the letters might rearrange themselves if she waited long enough.
Then she laughed.
It was a sharp, brittle sound that fooled no one.
“That is old,” she said.
“We bought this house.
We closed on it two years ago.”
Elena removed another certified page from the blue envelope.
“You attended something presented as a closing.
That is not the same as receiving valid title.”
My father rose so quickly that his chair fell backward.
“This is a family misunderstanding,” he said.
“You have no right to walk in here and frighten everyone with legal language.”
Elena did not even look at him.
“I represent Natalie.
I have every right to explain why your daughter cannot be removed from property she legally controls.”
The police officer Madison had called stepped farther into the dining room.
He had entered expecting an ordinary trespassing complaint.
Now his eyes moved from my swollen cheek to the deed, the overturned chair, and the folder beneath my hand.
“Who struck you?” he asked me.
Madison answered before I could.
“Nobody struck her.
She is doing this because she is jealous.”
The officer looked at the red line beneath my eye.
“I asked her.”
I met his gaze.
“My sister slapped me in front of everyone at this table.”
Jake closed his eyes.
My mother whispered, “Natalie, please.”
That word almost made me laugh.
Please had never been used when I needed protection.
It appeared only when telling the truth became inconvenient for them.
The officer separated Madison from the table and asked her to stand near the living room entrance.
She protested that it was her home.
Elena quietly lifted the certified deed again.
“Ownership appears disputed,” the officer said.
“This is not a situation where I am removing someone tonight without reviewing the documents.
The assault allegation is separate.”
