Repayment beginning “when financially practical.”
I studied the signature line.
“You already prepared paperwork.”
“We’re trying to be respectful,” Dad said.
Mom smiled. “Mia doesn’t know we’re asking. We want this to be a surprise.”
I nodded slowly.
Then I asked the question.
“Does Mia know you sold Grandma’s lake house last year?”
Mom’s expression changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Dad froze.
After Grandma died, the lake house had supposedly been placed into a family trust.
Mom had always said it could not be sold unless all three grandchildren agreed.
I had never agreed.
Neither had Mia.
Yet county records showed the property had changed hands eleven months earlier.
Mom recovered quickly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I reached for the file my attorney had sent.
