Miles explained that the system automatically stored encrypted backup clips for seventy-two hours. He had called because Daniel had requested that the entire account be shut down, and the timing had concerned him.
“You can’t give her anything,” Daniel said loudly. “That footage belongs to my mother.”
The police officer entered the room at that moment. He did not raise his voice, but Daniel immediately stepped away from my bed.
“Sir, no one is releasing anything yet,” the officer said. “We are preserving potential evidence related to an emergency response.”
Daniel looked at me as though I had betrayed him. “You’re really going to let them investigate my mother?”
“No,” I said. “You both made that decision for yourselves.”
The officer took statements from the paramedics, the dispatcher, and Tessa. The hospital photographed my injuries and documented the circumstances of the delivery, while a social worker asked whether I had somewhere safe to take my daughter after we were discharged.
Tessa answered before I could. “They are coming home with me.”
Daniel’s expression softened, and for a moment he looked like the man I had loved. “Claire, we can talk about this privately. You don’t need to take our baby away because my mother made one terrible mistake.”
I stared at him. “She did not make one mistake. She hit me, prevented me from leaving, locked me in, and then tried to take my baby while I was injured.”
His eyes flicked toward the officer. “I didn’t know she locked the door.”
The officer’s phone rang before I could respond. He listened for less than a minute, then looked directly at Daniel.
“The backup footage is available,” he said. “And it shows you arriving at your mother’s house before the ambulance.”
The room went silent.
Daniel had told me he was hours away on a work assignment. But the video placed him in that hallway while I was begging to be taken to the hospital.
Then the officer added, “It also shows what you did after your mother locked the bathroom door.”
Part 4: The Moment the Video Exposed Them Both
The officer did not show the video in the hospital room. He explained that the footage would be preserved for the investigation, but he described enough for me to understand what Daniel had hidden.
At 4:26 a.m., while I was begging his mother to take me to the hospital, Daniel had entered the house through the garage. He had watched his mother block the hallway, watched me disappear into the bathroom, and then followed her to the door.
“He told her to let you calm down,” the officer said. “Then he left through the back entrance.” Daniel shook his head violently. “That is not what happened. I thought she was exaggerating the situation.”
“You saw me in labor,” I said. “You heard me ask for help.”
He lowered his eyes. It was the first honest thing he had done all day. The footage revealed more than a few minutes in the hallway. It showed Daniel returning to the house after the ambulance had been called, walking straight to the security panel, and deleting the clips before emergency responders arrived.
